Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses an intense beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair.
During laser hair removal, the laser emits light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. The light energy is converted into heat, which damages the hair follicles in the skin that produce hair. This damage prevents or delays future hair growth. Laser hair removal is most effective in people with light skin and dark hair, but it can be successfully used on all skin types.
Laser hair removal is used to reduce unwanted hair. Common treatment areas include legs, underarms, upper lip, chin, and bikini area. However, it is possible to treat unwanted hair in almost any area except the eyelid and surrounding area. Tattooed skin should not be treated.
What Determines the Success of Laser Hair Removal?
Device Selection
The first step to a successful laser hair removal application is choosing the right device.
Our clinic uses a laser with a functional system that can perform treatment at 3 wavelengths.
Features of our device;
It has wavelengths of 755 nm, 808 nm, and 1064 nm.
It targets different tissue depths as well as the structures inside the hair follicles. This ensures more effective results.
It combines all the advantages of 3 wavelengths: 808nm, 755nm, and 1064nm.
The components are FDA and CE certified.
Skin Color
Having light skin tone is advantageous for the treatment. Because dose increases can be made more easily in light skin types. The higher the laser dose, the greater the success.
Hair Color
Laser hair removal is more effective on thick hairs. Therefore, the darker the hair, the more successful the laser hair removal. Effectiveness is very low or nonexistent on fine hairs. Diode lasers can be effective on some selected fine hairs.
Area to be treated: One of the most difficult areas for hair removal is the face. Diode lasers are the ideal choice for the face. Alexandrite lasers should not be preferred for the face. The armpits, genital area, and lower thighs are the areas that respond best to laser hair removal.
Gender
Women are more advantaged for laser hair removal. The average success rate is lower in men than in women. If there is hormonally induced hair growth in women, the underlying condition needs to be treated.
Hair color and skin type affect the success of laser hair removal. The basic principle is that the hair pigment, not the skin pigment, should absorb the light. The laser should only damage the hair follicle without damaging the skin. Therefore, the contrast between hair and skin color – dark hair and light skin – gives the best results.
When there is little contrast between hair and skin color, the risk of damaging the skin is higher, but advances in laser technology have made laser hair removal an option for people with darker skin tones. Laser hair removal is less effective for hair colors that do not absorb light well (gray, red, yellow, and white).
What Should You Pay Attention to Before Laser Hair Removal?
For at least one month prior to laser hair removal, waxing, epilators, tweezers, and threading should be avoided. For laser hair removal to be effective, the hair must reach the root.
Also, sunbathing or using a tanning bed should be avoided for 1-1.5 months prior to laser hair removal. All medications being used and all known illnesses, especially skin diseases, should be reported to the doctor before laser hair removal. Furthermore, if you have received acne treatment in the last 6 months, you must inform your doctor.
What Preparations Are Made for Laser Hair Removal?
Before the laser hair removal procedure, the area is cleaned with a wet wipe to remove deodorant and other cosmetics. The hairs in the area are trimmed with a razor. To avoid wasting time in subsequent sessions, the trimming can be done 3 days beforehand. Pain during laser hair removal is generally minimal. However, for those who experience significant pain, a local anesthetic cream can be applied 1 hour before the procedure.
How is Laser Hair Removal Performed?
Laser beams produced by the laser device are applied to the skin with a handpiece. An area of 15 mm in diameter is scanned with individual shots each time. Both the person performing and the person undergoing laser hair removal must wear protective eyewear during the procedure.
The beams applied to the skin are absorbed by melanin, the pigment in the hair that gives it its black color. The absorbed light energy is converted into heat energy in the hair. The heat transmitted to the hair follicle destroys the hair follicle in milliseconds. At this moment, a slight stinging sensation is felt, and swelling and redness are observed in the hair follicles.
These symptoms indicate that the hairs have been affected. During the procedure, the skin is protected by air and contact cooling provided by the device, reducing pain and side effects. Even during cooling, redness and swelling subside.
After laser hair removal, apply ice to the area at 15-20 minute intervals.
